10 tips on how to improve SEO for your component catalogs

Today, no information can hide from the web giant Google. It is the most popular search engine in the world. It references the pages of every website thanks to its complex algorithm. To be well referenced on Google (and optimized as regards its algorithm), you simply have to apply certain rules to significantly improve your SEO.

Optimizing the referencing of your website starts with a crucial step: defining a list of keywords or strategic expressions (several keywords).

 

1 – Define key words

The aim is to find keywords that match the terms in the content on your website and the keywords most commonly typed into search engines (concerning your product area), so that users are pointed towards your site.

A brainstorming session will enable you to draw up a list of keywords that you consider most important.

There are several brainstorming session, you should have about twenty keywords. These words should be found on your website and also match the words that appear in web searches.

There are several tools available to help you define your list of keywords.

Now that you know what keywords you need to optimize, consider including them when writing your pages: title tags, H1 tags, in links, ALT tags (images) and in texts.

Note: the idea is not to put as many keywords as possible and neglect the quality of your article. The over-use of keywords is penalized by Google. You must find the right balance by mentioning enough keywords to make your pages appear in searches while avoiding writing heavy, repetitive text.

2 – Create high-quality content

Contrary to common belief, Google’s robots scan web pages and not websites. That is why you must consider each page of your site as a mini website.

Your content must be high quality and contain approximately 800-900 words. To make quality content, you must above all know what kind of people visit your website and their needs. Also, you must absolutely not duplicate existing content because you will be penalized by Google!

By answering their need through the content on your website, your pages will be naturally referenced because they correspond to your visitors’ searches.

3 – Make your articles readable

To make your articles easier to read and avoid a high visitor bounce rate, you need make sure the texts are not too dense.

  • Put in line breaks (write paragraphs with 2 or 3 lines maximum),
  • Choose legible colors (and highlight important terms in bold or color),
  • Adjust the line spacing (lines too close together can make it difficult to read),
  • The font size.

Reading should be a pleasure; visitors to your website should not need to make an effort to get the information they need.

 

4 – Illustrate your articles

Adding pictures to illustrate your explanations makes reading an article more enjoyable.

Relevant pictures will enable your readers to remember your articles and also to understand the point you want to make more easily.

Do not forget to assign an ALT tag to each of your pictures. A simple sentence is enough to enable Google’s robots to understand what your picture refers to. And if your website cannot upload pictures, your visitors will have an indication of what should have appeared at that location.

 

5 – Fill in the title tags

Each page of your site has a title tag that must be filled in.

It is one of the most important tags in SEO because it describes the content of your web page and sends a signal directly to different search engines to allow them to sort, position and evaluate your web pages.

The length of the title tag at Google is 600 pixels. So, you should keep the title to 70 characters to avoid it being truncated.

A title tag must contain key words or expressions in relation to your website.

 

6 – The meta description of your pages

The meta description tag is an element designed to describe your content in a few lines (240 characters since early December 2017 on Google). It corresponds to the extract that appears under the content titles in Google searches.

Even though this tag does not ensure better direct referencing of your content, it should not be neglected in terms of natural referencing.

Indeed, if you do not fill this in or optimize it, you will not be able to inform internet users about the subject of your article. It’s a bit like finding a book without a synopsis. You do not know what the book is about, apart from the title which gives a vague idea.

Google Voice Searches need to be increasingly taken into consideration. Since the majority of these requests are formulated as questions, you may consider formulating your meta tag in question format.

 

7 – Your “own” website code

In addition to scanning your content, Google scans the overall code of your website. And it is not very tolerant of mistakes. So, the architecture of your site needs to be clear and the code must not contain errors.

Watch out for any poorly closed tags!

 

8 – Delete broken links

When you add internal or external links to your website, it is possible the URL of the page to which you direct your users gets modified or deleted; this produces the famous 404 display.

To avoid giving a poor user experience, regularly check your blog for broken links and modify or delete them if necessary.

 

9 – Add internal and external links

To optimize your SEO, there is nothing better than creating internal links and having external links that point to your site.

  • External links pointing to your site are called backlinks. A backlink is simply an incoming link to your site from another site. This is useful for getting Google Juice (traffic) from another site, building your e-reputation and profile.

Note, all external websites are not good. If the website in question has no relation with your activity or it has a bad reputation, you will be penalized. Therefore, avoid sites that are blacklisted by Google.

  • Internal links are located within your website. They keep users on your website as long as possible by making them jump from page to page. It is not easy to get people to visit your site, so when you get them there, you need to keep them by providing content that supplements what they have found elsewhere.

 

10- Adapt your website for mobile devices

Perhaps I should have mentioned this point first. Let’s say that I wanted to keep the best for last. What can you say about a non-responsive website?

I would say that it is unacceptable, both in terms of user experience and SEO!

Google has been paying special attention to responsive web design for a long time. If your website is not adapted to mobile devices, it will be very complicated for search engines to reference your content.

In addition, if your site is not accessible on mobile devices, users will not want to come back.

SEO is evolving very rapidly: what was true last month is not necessarily true today. So, it is very important to keep up to date and avoid obsolete SEO techniques. Follow Google’s instructions to the letter and do not try to fool the system, or you will be penalized
