How Stagnoli uses 3D CAD models to get its products discovered by more engineers

In short:

Stagnoli, an Italian manufacturer of thermoplastic gears and mechanical transmission components, publishes its product catalog and 3D CAD models on TraceParts to make them directly accessible to engineers and designers.

By publishing its catalog on TraceParts, Stagnoli:

  • Gives engineers direct access to ready-to-use 3D CAD models
  • Increases the visibility of its standard products among new engineers and designers
  • Identifies new business opportunities using data from CAD model downloads

“Compared with more conventional product promotion, TraceParts feels much more organic because engineers discover us while actively looking for a product and the technical information they need.”

Reaching the engineers who select the components

Founded in 1981, Stagnoli specializes in the design and production of thermoplastic gears and mechanical transmission components. Its standard catalog includes approximately 2,500 to 3,000 products, including spur gears, bevel gears, helical gears, racks and pulleys.

Alongside its standard product range, the company develops custom gearboxes and components for OEM customers and serves machine manufacturers worldwide across industries such as packaging, food and beverage, bottling, cleaning machinery, conveyors and material handling.

Mechanical engineers and designers are therefore a key audience for Stagnoli: they are the ones evaluating the technical requirements, selecting the right components and ultimately specifying them in their machine designs.

Moving beyond traditional product promotion

Stagnoli had already built a strong digital presence around its custom projects, but increasing the visibility of its standard product catalog required a different approach.

Engineers unfamiliar with Stagnoli would not necessarily search directly for its products. The company considered publishing its 3D models exclusively on its own website, but saw the risk of creating an isolated resource with limited visibility.

For Stagnoli, the opportunity was therefore to make its products available in an environment where engineers were already searching for components.

A design office wants to find the components and technical data they need in one place. That was one of the main reasons we decided to work with TraceParts.

Stagnoli’s interest in TraceParts also grew through one of its distributors, which was already publishing products from other component manufacturers on the platform. The CAD download activity, including interest from markets the distributor was not actively targeting, helped demonstrate the potential of making Stagnoli’s own standard product catalog available in the same way.

Making CAD models directly accessible to customers

Product visibility was not the only challenge. Before publishing its catalog on TraceParts, Stagnoli managed 3D model requests manually. Customers sent the required product references by email, and the corresponding STEP files were then shared individually.

Managing 3D model requests manually was inefficient and time-consuming. That was another important reason for us to look for a solution like TraceParts.

By making its CAD models available through TraceParts, Stagnoli can now give customers and prospects direct access to the product data they need, while reducing the need for its teams to manually process individual CAD requests.

Turning CAD downloads into business opportunities

Since publishing its catalog on TraceParts, Stagnoli has generated a significant volume of CAD downloads from both existing customers and new prospects. These downloads give the company greater visibility into the engineers and companies actively interested in its products.

The quality of the engineering audience on TraceParts is high. Among the people downloading our products, we see relevant contacts from established industrial companies.

This information is already being used by Stagnoli’s sales team to identify promising prospects, prepare customer visits and support business trips. For a company operating in a specialized market, this also creates opportunities to reach engineering teams within larger organizations that might otherwise be more difficult to approach.

TraceParts allows us to get in touch with larger companies because they are already interested in the product. That puts us in a much better position when we start the conversation.

Stagnoli is now building on this product interest by refining how different download profiles are qualified and followed up according to their potential and level of relevance. The company is also preparing the launch of its new e-commerce website, creating an additional way for engineers to move from product discovery to purchasing small quantities for prototypes and early-stage projects.

For manufacturers of standardized components targeting OEMs and machine manufacturers, this approach creates a direct connection with engineers actively searching for components and technical information.

From the initial catalog setup through to the ongoing collaboration, Stagnoli also highlights the quality of the support provided by the TraceParts team.
